direct-drive lineup jumped a bit too quickly from the R9 to the R16, and the R12 fills that exact gap. Twelve newton-meters is that famous sweet spot that many pilots consider ideal: enough power to never saturate the signal (clipping) during hard inputs, but not so much that it’ll leave your shoulders aching after twenty minutes. Right from our first few laps, we felt that torque that remains controllable while still delivering plenty of power.

How it feels, controller in hand

The real test of a suspension is how it feels through the handlebars, and in that regard, the R12 won us over. Rumble strips, bumps, and changes in road surface are transmitted clearly, without being either exaggerated or muddled. Going into a turn, the front end reacts very quickly: you can feel the front end loading up, and—most importantly—you can recover from the onset of a slide more easily because the feedback about loss of traction comes early and clearly. During long rides, two things stood out to us: the chassis stays cool and remains virtually silent, with no rattling even when you’re revving at 12 Nm.

The only downside in terms of feel is understeer on certain tracks—notably in Assetto Corsa—where the feedback is a bit subtle: you end up relying more on visual cues and sound than on your hands. Adjusting the slip settings helps, though it doesn’t completely eliminate the issue. It’s not a deal-breaker, but we thought it was worth mentioning.

A compact, well-finished aluminum block

The aircraft-grade aluminum chassis inspires confidence: it has a solid feel and doesn’t wobble. Weighing just 7.5 kg and with its compact design, the R12 is barely noticeable once secured, and its compact size allows you to position the screen closer to the steering wheel, which is a big help in a single-screen setup. On the downside, however, the mount is only available from the bottom (not from the side or front), and the power button on the back isn’t the easiest to reach once the base is installed in the cockpit.

Pit House, Settings, and Safety

When it comes to software, MOZA Pit House remains one of the best companions in the sim racing ecosystem, in our opinion. The interface is clean, with no buried menus, featuring game-specific profiles for a quick start—and, for those who like to tinker, 19-point force feedback adjustment, a road feel equalizer, and customizable FFB curves. A belt- or gear-driven steering wheel is sufficient to start with; an affordable direct-drive model (such as the CSL DD) offers a much better feel if your budget allows. Our tests, rated on a scale of 10, help you compare options without making a mistake.
</details><details class="srg-q">
Direct drive or belt drive: What's the difference?

A direct-drive base connects the steering wheel directly to the motor: the force feedback is more powerful, more precise, and more detailed than that of a belt- or gear-driven system. It’s more immersive but more expensive, and it requires a sturdier stand. For beginners, a belt-driven base remains a good choice.
</details><details class="srg-q">
Does this hardware work on PS5 and Xbox?

It depends on the specific model, not the brand: with Fanatec, for example, PlayStation compatibility comes from the base, and Xbox compatibility comes from the steering wheel. Always check the console compatibility listed on each product page before buying, because a steering wheel designed for PC won't necessarily work on a console.
</details><details class="srg-q">
Do you need a cockpit to get off to a good start?

Not necessarily, but a stable mount is essential: even the best steering wheel is useless if it wobbles on a table. A foldable mount is enough to get started; a rigid cockpit becomes really useful once you switch to a powerful direct-drive base.
</details><details class="srg-q">
How much should I budget for a good setup?

Expect to spend about 300 to 500 € for a decent starter set of a flywheel and pedal set, plus a mount. Affordable direct-drive systems start at a slightly higher price but last for years. It all depends on your platform and your goals.
</details>
{
    "@context": "https://schema.org",
    "@type": "FAQPage",
    "mainEntity": [
        {
            "@type": "Question",
            "name": "Quel volant sim racing choisir pour débuter ?",
            "acceptedAnswer": {
                "@type": "Answer",
                "text": "Visez un ensemble volant et pédalier cohérent avec votre plateforme, quitte à monter en gamme ensuite.
