In a nutshell: Our verdict

For most PS5 gamers in 2026, the best choice is the Thrustmaster T598 : a genuine, fully licensed direct-drive system at the best price. If you live in Gran Turismo 7the Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro is the go-to choice for this game. For the best experience, the Logitech RS50 ; on a tight budget, the Thrustmaster T248.

On PlayStation 5, choosing a steering wheel starts with a rule that many people don't know: Sony locks down its console, and only steering wheels PlayStation licensees work. Crucially, unlike the Xbox, this license is found in the base (the motor unit), not in the steering wheel itself. As a direct result, you cannot “unlock” an unlicensed base (Moza, Simagic, or the Fanatec CSL DD) by mounting a different steering wheel on it. On PS5, you must therefore start with an officially compatible base or bundle. See also Our selection of PS5 steering wheels.

How to Choose the Right PS5 Controller?

Four criteria, and one pitfall to avoid:

  • The PlayStation license, in the database. This is what makes the steering wheel PS5-compatible, and on PlayStation, it's powered by the base, not by the steering wheel itself. So be careful: the bases Moza, Simagic and Fanatec CSL DD Since they are not PS5-certified, no steering wheel will make them compatible.
  • Direct drive or not. Direct drive connects the motor directly to the steering wheel shaft, providing force feedback (FFB) that is much more precise and responsive than a belt- or gear-driven system. Whenever possible, we prefer direct drive, even at low torque.
  • Torque, in Nm. It provides maximum torque. 3 to 5 Nm is enough to get started and get a good feel for the car; 8 Nm and above is just a bonus and provides extra reserve, which is useful for avid gamers. There’s no point in overpaying for torque you won’t use.
  • Complete package or base unit only. A kit (base, steering wheel, pedals) is ready to use and simpler. High-end bases are sold separately: in that case, you’ll need to add a steering wheel and pedals, and use a rigid cockpit.

As for gaming, all of these steering wheels are compatible with the current PS5 models: Gran Turismo 7, EA Sports WRC, F1 24 or Assetto Corsa Competizione.

Thrustmaster T598, PS5-compatible steering wheel

The best choice for most players

Thrustmaster T598 8.5/10

About 469 € · Axial direct drive · 5 Nm

For most PS5 players who want to switch to the direct drive Without breaking the bank, this is the best deal of 2026. The T598 is Thrustmaster’s first true consumer-grade DD, and it features a motor that axial flow : In practice, it runs smoothly without any jerking or stuttering, with a fluidity that’s surprising for this price point. The brand has added its HARMONY technology, which brings out the fine textures of the track and the rumble strips. The package is complete and PlayStation-licensed (base, detachable rim, Hall-effect sensor pedals), so you just plug it in and go. To be honest: with 5 Nm of constant torque, you can sometimes feel the limit during hard braking, and the stock rim remains basic. But as a modern entry point into direct-drive systems, it’s hard to beat for the price.

We love

  • True direct drive with an axial motor, very smooth
  • Complete, licensed PS5/PS4/PC bundle
  • Techno HARMONY (subtle textures in the track)

We like it less

  • A constant 5 Nm—you can feel the limit when applying heavy pressure
  • Basic stock rims and crankset

Who is this for: Most PS5 gamers who want to switch to direct drive without breaking the bank.

Fanatec GT DD Pro, PS5-compatible steering wheel

The Best of Gran Turismo 7

Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro 8.5/10

About 700 € · Direct Drive · 5 Nm (8 with Boost Kit)

If Gran Turismo 7 is your main game—it’s THE gold standard. The Gran Turismo DD Pro was co-developed with Polyphony Digital, the studio behind GT7, and it integrates perfectly with the game. It’s a must-have Officially licensed by PlayStation (the authentication chip is in the base—an important feature on the PS5), complete with a full package and Fanatec’s QR2 quick-release mount. Torque starts at 5 Nm and increases to 8 Nm with the optional Boost Kit. Its real strength, beyond GT7, is that it opens the door to the Fanatec ecosystem: you’ll be able to switch out the steering wheel and pedals and upgrade to higher-end models later on. The only downside is that you’ll need to purchase the Boost Kit to take full advantage of the 8 Nm.

We love

  • Co-developed with the Gran Turismo 7 studio
  • Officially Licensed PlayStation Base
  • Entry-level model for the Fanatec ecosystem (QR2, upgradeable)

We like it less

  • 5 Nm without the Boost Kit (available for purchase) to reach 8 Nm
  • Fanatec's availability and prices may vary from time to time

Who is this for: Gran Turismo 7 players, and anyone looking for a proven and upgradeable PS5 setup.

Logitech RS50, PS5-compatible steering wheel

The best experience (our favorite)

Logitech RS50 (PS5 setup) 9/10

About 650 € · Direct Drive + TrueForce · 8 Nm

The steering wheel offers the best feel in the lineup. It goes up to 8 Nm, and, most importantly, Logitech is integrating its technology into it TrueForce : In addition to haptic feedback, it detects a second signal from the game (engine, track texture, sliding) and overlays it on top of the rest, providing a rare level of detail. The chassis is made of metal, the OLED screen is handy, and load-cell pedals are included. On PS5, compatibility comes from a chip in the base, so no hacking required. Two fair caveats: TrueForce is only fully utilized in a handful of games, and Logitech’s steering wheel ecosystem remains limited compared to Fanatec or Moza. Once you’ve added everything you need, the actual cost also goes up a bit.

We love

  • 8 Nm + TrueForce, the highest level of detail in the lineup
  • Metal frame, OLED display, load-cell pedals included
  • Native PS5 compatibility (chip in the base)

We like it less

  • TrueForce is fully utilized in only a few games
  • Logitech's steering wheel ecosystem remains limited

Who is this for: The PS5 gamer who's willing to pay the price for the best experience—without stepping foot in a Fanatec store.

Thrustmaster T248, PS5-compatible steering wheel

The Best Budget Option

Thrustmaster T248 7/10

About 250 € · Hybrid · 3.5 Nm

Before making the leap to direct drive, the T248 is the best “serious” budget steering wheel for the PS5. Its hybrid system delivers approximately 3.5 Nm, a step up from entry-level gear-driven steering wheels, with a complete package (base unit, 28-cm steering wheel, 3-pedal magnetic pedal set) and a handy little LCD screen. It’s an officially licensed PlayStation product, and both the grip and the finish are well-crafted. Its limitations are typical for its category: it’s not direct drive, the magnetic paddles are a bit noisy, and the torque eventually hits a ceiling. But for experiencing the thrill of driving without spending €500, it’s a solid choice.

We love

  • The best non-DD in its price range
  • Complete set with LCD screen and 3-pedal pedal set
  • Factory-Certified PlayStation Specialist

We like it less

  • No direct drive; torque is limited
  • Magnetic palettes that are a bit noisy

Who is this for: A serious option on a tight budget, or a first steering wheel before moving on to direct drive.

Fanatec ClubSport DD+, PS5-compatible steering wheel

The Scalable Premium Plan

Fanatec ClubSport DD+ 9/10

About 1,000 € · Direct Drive · 15 to 18 Nm

If you're looking for a long-lasting purchase, the ClubSport DD+ is the top-of-the-line PlayStation-licensed model. It delivers 15 Nm couples, forced to 18 Nm via a firmware update, featuring FullForce technology that adds haptic feedback to the rim. It’s just the base unit: you build your steering wheel and pedal set around it, which requires a certain budget and a rigid cockpit, but offers enormous room for improvement. For a dedicated driver who values realism and doesn’t want to buy a new base for a long time, it’s a sound investment. Best suited for those who know they’ll be pushing their driving to the limit.

We love

  • 15 Nm boosted to 18 Nm via firmware, FullForce technology
  • PlayStation-licensed, complete Fanatec ecosystem
  • Room for improvement that lasts for years

We like it less

  • Base unit only: steering wheel and pedals must be purchased separately
  • Requires a rigid cockpit and a substantial budget

Who is this for: The PS5 enthusiast who thinks long-term and wants a high-end, upgradeable setup.

So, which one should you choose?

  • The best option for most people: The Thrustmaster T598, your first true full-direct-drive steering wheel.
  • For Gran Turismo 7: The Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro—the most natural setup for this game.
  • Our favorite: the Logitech RS50, if your budget allows.
  • Best Budget Option: The Thrustmaster T248.
  • The Scalable Premium Plan: the Fanatec ClubSport DD+.

On an even tighter budget? The Thrustmaster T128 (around €180) and the Logitech G29 are still decent entry-level options, both licensed by PlayStation, even though their force feedback is much more modest. Whichever one you choose, always make sure the base is properly PS5 licensed. You can also browse Our selection of PS5 steering wheels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do a Moza steering wheel or a Fanatec CSL DD base work on the PS5?

No. On PlayStation, the license is tied to the base unit, and neither the Moza bases nor the Fanatec CSL DD are PS5-licensed. No steering wheel will make them compatible. You need an officially PlayStation-licensed base unit, such as the Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro.

Is the Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro compatible with Gran Turismo 7?

Yes, it was co-developed with Polyphony Digital, the studio behind Gran Turismo 7. It integrates seamlessly into the game, and it’s the most natural direct-drive setup for GT7 fans.

Do I need the GT DD Pro Boost Kit?

No, it's optional. The base model delivers 5 Nm as standard, which is more than enough to get started and get a feel for the car. The Boost Kit increases that to 8 Nm for more power in reserve, which is useful as you improve.
